In 2016, Google announced it was starting to experiment with mobile-first indexing, due to the majority of online searchers using mobile devices. Since then, Google has been slowly evaluating mobile-friendly websites and transitioning them to mobile-first indexing. Over 70% of known, crawled sites are now on mobile-first indexing, and Google announced last year that it would fully roll out in March 2021. Google announced they are beginning to roll out the mobile first indexing process, although I don’t think it rolled out yet. Google may have done large algorithm and ranking updates in search around March 23rd and March 28th, both likely unrelated to the mobile-first indexing rollout. SEOs are complaining about new URLs not being indexed but John Mueller of Google said all is working as expected. Google submit URL feature seems to be working again. Google said there is no reset button for a site that has a penalty. Google needs to write up guidelines around A/B testing and search. Bing added new intelligent search features. Google added in-line lyric translation in search. Google is testing expandable sitelinks with snippets. Google is showing top stories summaries. Google Partner Search is going away, as are other Google Partner features. Google announced the new keyword planner look and feel. Google emailed everyone about their responsibilities with GDPR. Google launched a new air quality search box that smells off. Google Posts is testing a new look. And the search community honored Nancy McDonald, Rob Bucci, Bartosz Goralewicz, Topher Kohan and Alexis Sanders this week. That was the past week in search at the Search Engine Roundtable.

The thing is, Google is moving over many sites that are desktop only, which does make sense if you think about it. Google recipe structured data has been updated, there are many changes. Google clarified page speed is based on mobile vs desktop after July. Google says don’t change URLs when you change content, no need to do that. Google says use 404s, not 403s. Google cannot understand embedded charts and graphs. Google is testing featured snippets that expand. Google AdWords Editor has a new version with more features. Google AdWords might be testing response search ads beta. Google My Business released new APIs, an agency dashboard and partner program. There are many Google Maps highlighted icons, here is a glossary of them. Google My Business added a clear button to the attributes section.
